Summer Book Study

We're excited to announce our first-ever chapter network Summer Book Study selection: Effective Universal Instruction by Gibbons, Brown, & Niebling! This book offers an action-oriented approach to implementing and sustaining evidence-aligned instruction in tier one. Everyone is invited to join us this summer for a relaxed and engaging learning opportunity facilitated by The Reading League's chapter leaders.

How to participate:
1. Register: Sign up for the book study using this link: https://bit.ly/TRLchapters. All participants will be sent weekly emails in June and July with a pacing guide, Zoom links, and additional resources related to what you are reading.
2. Get the Book: The book study is free, but you'll need to get your own copy of Effective Universal Instruction. Use code SUMMER2024 in The Reading League's shop to receive a 10% discount on this book and a complimentary copy of Science of Reading: The Defining Guide.
3. Engage: Attend our live, virtual kickoff with Dr. Stephanie Stollar, read 1-2 chapters per week, watch recorded videos with the authors at your own pace, share your favorite quotes on social media, and save the date for a live Q&A with the authors on July 29!

Scaffolding Complex Texts: Instructional Strategies for Equitable Access to Rigorous Content

How can struggling readers comprehend complex texts that are challenging for them to read? The answer lies in instructional scaffolds. This session will model teacher practices that can be immediately implemented to assist struggling readers in reading and learning from rigorous texts and ensure equitable access to challenging content.

Michelle Elia, assistant professor at Marietta College, prepares pre-service teachers to teach reading using practices grounded in reading science. Her previous roles include Ohio Literacy Lead, Literacy Specialist, Special Education Consultant, and Intervention Specialist. Elia is a nationally recognized literacy PD provider and president of The Reading League Ohio. A lifelong learner, Elia is pursuing her doctorate in Reading Science at Mount St. Joseph University.
